Hurst Junior Club

The Coaches

The Hurst junior club sessions are run by Sam Scharf and Daniel Bates.

They are assisted by other Badminton England coaches and members of the Senior club where necessary.  All adults involved with the club are CRB checked, and follow strict child protection guidelines.

Sam Scharf

With over 18 years of coaching in Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire Sam brings together experience and fresh ideas to coaching. In addition to badminton specific coaching, Sam is working towards qualifications in Strength and Conditioning, specifically focused on young athletes. This is closely aligned to Long Term Athlete Development which is recognised by Badminton England.

Alongside coaching, Sam is still actively involved with playing the sport at a high level for club and County, and plays for the senior Ist team.

Paul Martell

Paul Martell is a Badminton England Level 2 qualified coach who has played senior level for Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire with several years of competing on the national circuit and currently enjoying masters badminton.

Daniel Bates

Daniel is a Badminton England Level 2 qualified coach, who has played for Cambridgeshire at all levels, and spent many years as Captain of the senior IInd team. Daniel maintains both Senior (highest MD #121, highest XD #41) and Masters (MD #3XD #5) national rankings.  He represented England in the BWF World Senior Championships in Turkey in September 2013 (where he reached the quarter-finals), and in Sweden in 2015, and also in the European Masters Championships in Portgual in September 2014 and Slovenia in 2016.

Daniel is also the coach for the Cambridge University Badminton Club (CUBAC), leading their development for mens and womens BUCS competitions, and the annual Varsity match against Oxford University.

Daniel is passionate about developing the skills and enthusiasm of young people, and sharpening their performance and playing skills.
